Yan'an city in Shaanxi province produced 22.98 million tonnes of raw coal in the first half of this year, increasing 12% from a year earlier, showed official data.
The city has a total of 63 coal mines, with seven operated by the provincial government while 56 owned by governments at the prefecture and lower levels. There are 17 coal mines in production.
Coal fields in the city cover an area of 7,110 square kilometers, with exploration and forecast areas at 2,306 and 4,804 square kilometers.
The preliminarily proved reserves of coal fields were 11 billion tonnes, and coal resources were mainly concentrated in Zichang, Huangling and Yichuan counties of the city.
The city planned to slash 3.6 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of coal capacity by closing 14 mines during the 13th Five-Year plan period (2016-2020).
It targeted to close two coal mines with capacity of 0.45 Mtpa in 2017.
Yan'an will further shut 0.15 Mtpa of coal capacity by closing one mine in 2018, and eliminate 1.5 Mtpa of capacity by closing five mines in 2020.
