Kestrel Coal Resources produced 5.57 million tonnes of saleable coal in 2023, down 2% from a year earlier, according to press release of shareholder PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk.
This decline can be attributed to high clay dilution content in the coal processing, leading to lower yields and reduced throughput capacity.
Kestrel is one of the world's largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.
The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, 51km Northeast of Emerald in Central Queensland, Australia, engaging in the entire mining process from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation.
In 2023, the mine's sales volumes decreased 3% from a year ago, reaching 5.56 million tonnes
Kestrel's coal is mainly sold to the export market in Asia, with Japan remaining as the largest destination followed by India and South Korea.
The coal mine is owned by EMR Capital of Australia and PT Adaro Energy of Indonesia. EMR Capital owns a 52% share and PT Adaro Energy owns the remaining 48%. EMR and Adaro joined forces to acquire the Rio Tinto 80% share in the Kestrel Coal Mine.
